Silver Championship results - 2025

Venue: Ponteland GC

Sunday 4th of May  2025   -  Tuesday 6th of May  2025

An excellent 3 days at Ponteland

Day one of the championship brought 55 ladies from throughout the County to compete at Ponteland Golf Club.
The course was presented extremely well and we were all treated to the most beautiful greens - smooth and true.

Unfortunately, we were in for a shock with the weather after having had a very hot spell with temperatures in the twenties. It was only 10 degrees on Sunday morning with a cold easterly wind. Thermals and woolly hats were the order of the day.
The catering and bar staff gave us a warm welcome and kept us fed and watered. Hot drinks were in high demand!
Claire Brown of Alnmouth won the best gross with a score of 82 and Christine Elliott of the City the best nett with a score of 89 - 14 =75. The scores reflect the extremely tough conditions.

On to the matchplay

Day two: The weather was very similar to the first day’s temperatures although, thankfully, the wind was slightly less. This was the start of the top sixteen in the match play event. All results of the matches can be found on the website. At the end of day 2 we were down to the final 4.

Day three: It was like being transported to another country. Beautiful sunshine and a temperature of 17 degrees. Perfect conditions for golf. Helen Cooper played against Candy Brown in the semi-finals and Lynne Liddle played against Susan Lam. Two close matches resulting in Helen and Susan reaching the final.

The final started at 1.30 pm. Again this was a close contest. The atmosphere was tense as both players wanted to become our new champion. Early on Susan had slightly the upper hand then Helen came fighting back.
The 17th hole was tense. Susan was 2 up on the tee. Her tee shot found trouble and Helen was down the middle. Helen won this hole to have the honour on the 18th tee and back to 1 down. Unfortunately Helen’s drive found the fairway bunker and Susan’s shot was well down the fairway. Helen got herself out of trouble and the hole was halved in par.
Susan Lam is our new Champion winning 1 up. Our congratulations to her.

I have lots of thank yous. Firstly thank you to Ponteland Golf Club for allowing us to hold this event. Thank you to the green keepers for presenting the course to such a high standard. Thank you to the catering and bar staff, who were kept extremely busy but kept smiling throughout. Thank you to the ladies section for the raffle and beautiful flowers. We raised £152 which helps to fund our team matches. Sue Hattrick, Lady Captain and Barbara Russell, Lady President were on hand to welcome everyone.
Thank you to my committee and Lady President who made the event run smoothly.
Finally, thank you to Liz Hartley (AKA Mrs David Bailey!) who took lots of photos which can be seen in the "Gallery" section of the website.
